Budget-Friendly Sleepwear To Love Your Postpartum Breastfeeding Experience

Nighttime with a new baby is a very involved process and can oftentimes be stressful.

What most new moms don’t know and what I was certainly not told about until my first baby arrived, there is no such thing as a baby sleeping through the night in the beginning.

Even if your baby wants to and is trying to, (and that’s a big IF), it is recommended that you wake your baby up to feed every few hours at least in the beginning.

In part it helps them stay healthy (I’m not confident in the details enough to try and elaborate on that it’s just what I have been told by multiple people) (I think it’s a blood sugar thing but don’t quote me).

The other part is that if you are breastfeeding, it helps to manage your supply and keep you from becoming too engorged and getting a clogged duct which could lead to mastitis.

Armed with this knowledge and experience from my first kiddo, I went on a hunt while pregnant with my second for some comfortable and functional sleepwear for the postpartum period and beyond.

This was a pretty big search that involved several orders and returns trying to find items that checked all of the boxes.

The list below is a compilation of sleepwear that I kept and have been loving since baby girl arrived.

Nightgowns

I have always loved the idea of nightgowns but I CANNOT stand my bare legs touching at night.

However, I found these button up nightgowns that provide easy access and they are kind of short so I still wear them with pants–mainly these joggers I’m going over next. I basically wear it like an oversized shirt.

They are also long-sleeve nightgowns which is a must for me because I can’t stand the feeling of a sweaty baby head on my bare arm. Plus being up to feed and rock the baby throughout the night, or if you are bedsharing and can’t use a blanket that high, it keeps you nice and warm.

Jogger Pants

If you are looking for some loungewear or pajama pants, I can’t recommend these enough. I got one pair with my first and 3 more while pregnant with my second.

They are comfortable and loose-fitting but not baggy. They have a waistband that helps support my postpartum tummy but isn’t too tight.

The ankle of the pants is slightly more fitted so they stay in place better without digging into your ankle.

I wear these most nights, I basically lived in them the first 1.5 months of postpartum day or night, and I still regularly reach for them if I plan to be home for all or most of the day. If I do go somewhere, I feel put together enough to do so without changing in most circumstances.

Button up set

These surprised me with how comfortable they are. I got a different but very similar looking set that I did not like so I had very little hope for this one. However, the fabric and fit was just right and this is frequently in my nightly rotation.

Robe

I have never been much of a robe person but with postpartum and needing to be up at night with the baby especially during the dead of winter, I wanted something comfortable to throw on.

I was searching for something that wouldn’t be bulky and would be comfortable enough to lay down in if it came to it.

All I have ever had in the past is robes with the belt that you tie off to close it and I know those are bulky and not comfortable to lay down in. I bought one anyway to try on because it did look super comfy, but I inevitably returned it.

In total I bought 4 robes to try on and landed on the one I almost didn’t even buy to try on because I thought I would like the other ones better – ha!

This zip up robe is the perfect balance of thick and soft and warm without being bulky and uncomfortable. The zipper makes access super convenient and closes the robe without a belt or knot to dig into you if you want to lay down in it.

Sleep Bralette

I had a different set that I used during both of my births while in the tub and at night during my first postpartum. However they came up too high under my arms and I was constantly adjusting them.

I got this new set of nighttime nursing bras and I love it a million times more. I can wear them all night and not even feel like I’m wearing a bra–at least compared to the previous ones.

Postpartum is a time of rest and recovery but it also comes with the challenge of a very dependent baby who needs your attention throughout the day and night. I highly recommend prioritizing comfortable lounge and sleepwear so that discomfort and inconvenience aren’t another challenge you are dealing with. Get yourself set up so that you can focus on your baby and resting.
